Philadelphia 76ers Rumors: Tobias Harris Might Reunite With Eastern Conference Rival in 2024 Free Agency
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia 76ers are faced with speculation surrounding Tobias Harris, as they gear up for their first-round matchup against the New York Knicks in the 2024 NBA playoffs.

Harris, 31, is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. And if recent reports are to be believed, there’s a chance that he might leave the City of Brotherly Love to join one of his former teams.

“The power forward’s tenure with the Philadelphia 76ers is expected to end once their postseason run concludes,” Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer wrote in his column. “Several NBA executives believe there’s a chance he’ll hand with the Detroit Pistons in free agency. But there are several other teams interested in the 13th-year veteran with career averages of 16.3 points and 6.2 rebounds.”

Before joining the Philadelphia 76ers in 2019, Tobias Harris had stints with the Milwaukee Bucks, Orlando Magic, Detroit Pistons, and the Los Angeles Clippers. In his three years with the Detroit Pistons, the Tennessee product averaged 16.8 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest.

Should the Detroit Pistons go for Tobias Harris?

Tobias Harris signed a five-year, $180 million contract extension with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2019. However, many believe paying a decent role player $36 million in annual average salary is too much.

Because the Philadelphia 76ers aren’t winning an NBA title anytime soon, Harris could use this summer to test his value in the open market and set up a huge payday for himself as he approaches the end of his prime years.

This is where a team like the Detroit Pistons comes in since they have a projected cap space of $72.9 million. Detroit can use a guy like Tobias Harris, a career 36.8 percent three-point shooter, to improve their offense which has the fourth-worst team PPG (109.9) and third-worst three-point FG% (34.8 percent) this season.
